Arthur United Church
Arthur United Church belongs to the United Church of Canada, formed in 1925 by the union of the Methodist, Congregational and most Presbyterian congregations in the country. The congregation's own roots are Methodist, and it has worshipped in the same building on Tucker Street since the 1890s.
Arthur United Church grew out of the village’s Methodist congregation. From 1850 the Methodists shared Arthur’s first schoolhouse with the Presbyterians and the Anglicans, each holding their services there in turn. The Methodists bought land on Tucker Street, the site of a former apple orchard, in 1892, and their church was completed in 1894 at a cost of $10,000; the congregation records with some pride that no mortgage was ever held against the building. Rev. A. E. Smith was the first resident minister, and a dedication service was held on the first Sunday of November 1892.
In 1925 the Arthur Methodist church became part of the United Church of Canada at the formation of that denomination, and the congregation has remained in its original building ever since. It worships on Sunday mornings at 10:30, moving outdoors in summer when the weather allows, and takes an active part in village organizations.
